XEVIOUS / Atari / 2600

I guess it's pretty tough to recreate a game that uses two buttons as a focal point of its gameplay when you've only got one available. Atari made a game effort with Xevious though, at least in prototype form. The lone orange button of the 2600 now simultaneously performs both functions of shooting and dropping bombs. That's really not even so much of an issue next to how hideously ugly and clunky the game is. There's actually a pretty decent spinning animation on the coin-shaped enemies that looks good for 2600 standards, but the rest of the game looks like someone partially digested the E.T. game then vomited it back up. Better off unreleased.
