CASTLEVANIA / Konami / NES (1987)

Badass Cinema is gaining a following as a legitimate genre of film, and it's my hope that one day Badass Platforming will too be recognized in such a way. The first Castlevania game would necessarily be recognized as one of the groundbreaking efforts of the genre. With much better play control than most Nintendo side-scrolling fare of the time and packed full of the dark moody tunes such as Vampire Killer and Wicked Child that would go on to become game music classics, Castlevania still holds up pretty well today though it's a bit on the short side and has its frustrating moments.
