SPACE INVADERS / Taito / Arcade

It's a testament to Space Invaders' design that it's still pretty entertaining and challenging even though it was one of the first commercial vidya games ever released, way back in 1978 (one of a depressingly small amount of games that is actually older than I am.)

Interesting tidbit: the mechanic of the aliens getting faster as their numbers decrease wasn't actually originally planned. It was an artifact of the primitive hardware at the time only able to render the large amounts of aliens on-screen at the start at a very slow movement speed, but able to make them gradually move faster as they were depleted. Designer Tomohiro Nishikado didn't originally plan for the game to work this way, but once he saw it occur he thought it was neat and challenging and left it in.
