TAC-SCAN / Sega / Arcade

The original arcade version of Tac-Scan is better looking than the Atari 2600 port but seems to have even iffier steering, especially in the sorta-first-person mode. It's basically a typical vertical shooter, but you fly a squadron of ships that can die in one hit rather than going solo, and can also replace these ships as you go. In this arcade version, you also sometimes transition to a forward-scrolling segment somewhat reminiscent of the Star Wars arcade game (just without any background objects.)

The on-the-fly transition from vertical shooting segments to forward-scrolling is kinda impressive for the time, like a primitive version of Border Down or something. Unfortunately, the vertical scrolling portions have really iffy control, and then it just turns to absolute ass when it shifts to the forward scroll.
